The research and education programs within the KIM Building address a wide range of the opportunities and challenges which face society, from energy and the environment to national security, transportation, healthcare, telecommunications and new product design and manufacturing. The 155,000 square-foot KIM Building houses (16) interdisciplinary research labs and (6) instructional labs which include information technology, nanotechnology, bioengineering, microelectronics and MEMS, sensors and actuators, environmental engineering, intelligent transportation systems and space research.
The project also features a 12,000 square–foot microfabrication clean room with state-of- the-art equipment that enables new miniaturization technologies.
The mechanical systems include the installation of (2) custom make-up air handling units and (4) custom air handling units for the microfabrication clean room and (4) custom air handling units for the lab building with the supporting supply/return/outside air/exhaust duct and chilled water/hot water/steam/condensate piping. The plumbing and HVAC systems supporting the labs include sanitary, domestic hot/cold water, process cooling water, lab hot/cold water, gas, vacuum, lab air, steam, deionized water, process/acid waste, lab supply/return duct, corrosive exhaust duct, general exhaust duct, pyrophoric exhaust duct, environmental room supply/return duct.
